The Center for Human-Environment System Sustainability (CHESS) was founded in December 2012, as an international research center affiliated with the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology (ESPRE) at Beijing Normal University (BNU). The primary goals of CHESS are to promote research and applications of landscape ecology, urban ecology, and sustainability science, and to provide an educational platform for training young scientists and graduate students. CHESS organizes periodic international forums on landscape ecology and sustainability science and hosts multiple guest lectures by international renowned scientists each year.
